More corporate support heading Down Under | Fundraising & Philanthropy Australasia Magazine: New research has revealed American companies plan to up their overseas corporate giving and 70% are donating to the Asia-Pacific region, Liz Henderson discovers.
Of the large American companies that give overseas, 86% plan to either maintain or increase their giving in the next financial year and 70% have a funding focus in Asia and the Pacific region.
These findings were revealed in Giving Beyond Borders: A Study of Global Giving by US Corporations, a report from Indiana University’s Lilly Family School of Philanthropy which looked at the corporate philanthropy of the top 100 companies on the 2012 Fortune 500 list.

Charitable Giving Experienced Modest Growth in October | Blackbaud News: harleston, S.C. (December 2, 2013) – Blackbaud, Inc. (NASDAQ: BLKB) today updated The Blackbaud Index with charitable giving trends through October 2013 and announced the launch of a new faith-based specialty index that tracks fundraising revenue for congregations and other faith-based organizations.
Based on data from 3,828 charities that raised more than $12 billion in the prior 12 months, The Blackbaud Index reported that overall charitable giving grew 2.3 percent for the three months ending October 2013, as compared to the same period in 2012.
Among 3,097 charities that raised nearly $1.7 billion online in the prior 12 months, online giving grew 9.9 percent in the same three-month period, as compared to the same period in 2012.

Small Survey of Foundations on “Hot Button Issues” Shows Little Hysteria - NPQ - Nonprofit Quarterly: The findings from a recent survey of private foundation donors has revealed some interesting, though perhaps unsurprising findings about how “small” private foundations think about both grantmaking and investments. The survey was done in October by Foundation Source, using a base of more than 1000 foundations that it serves. There were 198 respondents to the survey and the majority of those have private foundations with less than $50 million in assets. As the press release states, “Foundations of this size account for 98% of the approximately 86,000 private foundations in the U.S.”

Endowments at private foundations grew by 12 percent in 2012, a significant improvement after they lost a little under 1 percent in 2011, according to a study of 140 funds released today.
But that’s still less than the S&P 500 gain, which was 16 percent last year. Many foundations continue to seek to regain the nearly 26 percent loss in value they sustained during the 2008 financial crisis.

The findings, published in Nonprofit Challenges: What Foundations Can Do, were based on a survey of 121 national nonprofit leaders, who oversee staffs with a median of 11 full-time equivalent employees, have annual expenses of $1.2 million, and derive 20% of their funding from foundations.

The median increase for all chief executives was 2 percent in 2011, compared with 1.6 percent in 2010. The Blackbaud Index today reported that overall charitable giving increased 1.8% and online giving increased 14.5% for the three months ending July 2013 as compared to the same period in 2012. As reported in the Charitable Giving Report, overall giving grew approximately 2% for the full year 2012 and online giving grew by about 11% in 2012 compared to 2011.

Positive Trends in Arts and Culture Funding—At Least on the Surface - NPQ - Nonprofit Quarterly: On the heels of the Giving USA finding that arts and culture was America’s fastest-growing philanthropic cause in 2012, Americans for the Arts (AFTA) has reported an uptick in business support for the sector. The latest edition of Giving USA cites an estimated 7.8 percent increase in arts and culture funding to $14.44 billion in 2012, compared with 2011. This exceeds the pre-recession peak of $13.7 billion in 2007 (not adjusting for inflation). AFTA’s BCA National Survey of Business Support for the Arts reports an increase of 18 percent in business giving to the cultural sector from 2009 to 2012, after downward trends in 2006 and 2009.
The BCA Report 2013 is based on a survey of 600 businesses, ranging in size from less than $1 million to more than $50 million. While the recent resurgence in arts funding by businesses was led by the largest companies, more than 80 percent of contributions reported came from small and mid-sized businesses.

A partnership between the Foundation Center and the International Human Rights Funders Group (IHRFG) has produced the first data-driven portrait of how foundations are advancing human rights around the world. According to new research released today by the two organizations, over 12,000 human rights grants supported more than 6,800 organizations worldwide, amounting to $1.2 billion in 2010. Advancing Human Rights: The State of Global Foundation Grantmaking confirms that human rights philanthropy is a global phenomenon: the 703 funders included in the analysis represent 29 countries across seven major world regions.

Both cash and non-cash giving increased during this timeframe, with a higher percentage of non-cash contributions in 2012 defining the post-recession giving era. In turn, this allows foundations to recycle their funds and leverage them for greater impact. Private foundations can count PRIs as part of their annual minimum payout.

The Institute for Philanthropy has published details of the values and beliefs which motivate 22 major donors to give to charity.
The paper, "After The Giving Pledge: Giving Behaviour of 22 Wealthy Donors", was written in the year that the Giving Pledge, founded by Warren Buffett and Bill and Melinda Gates in 2010, was extended to wealthy donors outside the US. Eight signatories from non-US countries have brought the total number of those who have taken the Pledge to 105.
The donors interviewed by the Institute for Philanthropy come from the UK, the US, Brazil, Canada, Lebanon and Mexico. Their foundations have an average endowment of $79 million and they give away each year an average of $2.1m.

Few funders make loans, equity investments � Philanthropy North Carolina: Total investment by foundations in program-related investments such as low-interest loans and equity investments grew to $701 million in 2009 from $139 million in 1990, while the average size of those investments grew steadily to more than $1.5 million in 2009 from just over $660,000 in 2000, says the study by the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, which cited IRS data.

Nonprofits generate $234 billion in revenues and nonprofit jobs represented 16.7% of the total employment in Massachusetts in 2010.

Arts and culture sector has key role in UK economy, finds report: The Arts Council England has today published its first analysis of the value of arts and culture to the national economy, finding that the sector has a turnover of �12.8bn.

How Local Events Shake Up Corporate Philanthropy — HBS Working Knowledge: A recent research paper shows that enormous events like the Olympics lead to a dramatic, albeit relatively short-term increase in otherwise steady charitable-giving patterns among firms that are headquartered in the event's host city.
