New Study Finds Men are More Charitable than Women - Press Release - Digital Journal: CAMBRIDGE, Mass., May 9, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The results of a national survey released today by BiddingForGood, a marketplace that connects consumers and marketers to nonprofits and schools by hosting online and mobile charity auctions, found that men give more money, more frequently to charitable causes than women. Almost a third of people expect to give less to charity in spontaneous donations this year, a new survey suggests.

The poll of more than 2,000 UK adults, carried out by Wriglesworth Research for the financial services group Foresters, found that 29 per cent of respondents said they would have to reduce the amount they give because they were worse off than last year.

Oh, The Humanities!: Does a donation really count if no one sees you giving? | News | National Post: Donating money to charity has become highly fashionable, a status symbol that has been dubbed “conspicious giving,” and comes with the burden of social expectation and manipulation, according to a paper to be presented at the Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences conference on Wednesday.

University of Alberta instructor Margrit Talpalaru coined the “conspicious giving” term to describe the way corporations, charities and society at large have latched onto North Americans’ desire for the visibility that comes with donating time or money.
