Giving to charities up nearly 1bn but sector barely grows
Giving to charities up nearly 1bn but sector barely grows: Individual giving to charities increased by 945m in 2010/11, but the voluntary sector on the whole barely managed to grow in real terms as inflation ate away at minor improvements.
The NCVO Civil Society Almanac, released today, also shows that while the sector was steady in real terms, charities cut spending for only the second time on record and by the largest margin since 1996. Inflation meant that a 2bn increase in income to 38.3bn was, in real terms, flat; meanwhile charities cut costs by a real terms figure of 800m.

Angie Moore-Survey Results Are In! (The Real Skinny on Nonprofit Data) : FundRaising Success: Two weeks ago I used my blog and even my colleagues at The AgitatorOpens in a new window blog to get as many nonprofits as possible to take a 10-minute survey. Why? Well, in early April I had a two-part blog on modeling that was the outcome of me asking experts in the industry four questions about modeling and how it can help those in the nonprofit industry be better fundraisers and marketers.

Nonprofit Finance Fund | Where Money Meets Mission
Nonprofit Finance Fund | Where Money Meets Mission: In this year’s survey, nearly 6000 respondents from nonprofits across the country shared the details of how they are adapting their organizations and finances to economic conditions. The survey, which was supported for the third year in a row by the Bank of America Charitable Foundation, reveals that 2012 was a year in which organizations either made or planned to make significant changes in order to cope with mounting economic stress. As NFF CEO Antony Bugg-Levine put it, “Nonprofits are changing the way they do business because they have to: government funding is not returning to pre-recession levels, philanthropic dollars are limited, and demand for critical services has climbed dramatically. At the same time, 56 percent of nonprofits plan to increase the number of people served. That goal requires systemic change and innovation– both within the sector, and more broadly as a society that values justice, progress and economic opportunity.”

Adrian Sargeant argues why getting the right data and researchers is key - Institute of Fundraising: The recent Money for Good / New Philanthropy Capital report, ‘Understanding Donor Motivation and Behaviour’ should be withdrawn. It fails to add in any way to our knowledge of either topic and worse, provides ‘information’ that could be immensely damaging to the very charities they profess to be trying to help.
