New Report: Philanthropy Needs to 'Smash Silos' to Help Address Social and Economic Crises - Press Release - Digital Journal: Philanthropic support for work that brings diverse groups working on seemingly disparate issues together creates a unique space for deliberation, negotiation, overcoming social and political differences and collaboration on mutually shared interests is imperative to solving long-standing social and economic problems, says a new report by the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy (NCRP; www.ncrp.org).
In "Smashing Silos in Philanthropy: Multi-Issue Advocacy and Organizing for Real Results (www.ncrp.org/paib/smashing-silos-in-philanthropy/multi-issue-advocacy-organizing)," the D.C.-based philanthropy research and advocacy group urges foundations that want to see breakthroughs on issues including poverty alleviation, protecting our environment, improving our education system and other complex issues to fund cross-issue grassroots organizations as part of their overall grantmaking strategy. These organizations organize and mobilize multiple constituents and citizens to cultivate the power, leadership and relationships necessary to move the needle toward lasting solutions.

There were 198 respondents to the survey and the majority of those have private foundations with less than $50 million in assets. As the press release states, “Foundations of this size account for 98% of the approximately 86,000 private foundations in the U.S.”

New Kids on the Clock; Joe Saxton on the rise in youth volunteering and its impact on society | nfpSynergy: Our recent research showed that volunteering among young people (16-24) has doubled over the last decade. Indeed, as recently as 2010 our data showed that only 16% were giving their time and after that we saw an almost continuous rise.
