New Report: Charity and Philanthropy in Russia, China, India and Brazil | Philanthropy In Focus
New Report: Charity and Philanthropy in Russia, China, India and Brazil | Philanthropy In Focus: One of the most significant international developments since the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 has been the growing economic power of the so-called BRICs — Brazil, Russia, India, and China. Dismissed in the 1970s by many as economic basket cases, the four countries, which account for over a quarter of the globe’s land mass and more than 40 percent of its population, have, in the quarter-century since that momentous event, opened their economies to the world and emerged as dominant global suppliers of manufactured goods and services (China and India), and raw materials (Brazil and Russia).

Donors Choose Unveils Data on Giving Trends and Need in Public Schools - NPQ - Nonprofit Quarterly: As a sample of the past thirteen years of data that is now available, Donors Choose has released a 2013 Giving Index highlighting the organization’s largest year of donor activity, representing 340,000 donors, $60.2 million in donations and over 130,000 projects. Some of this study’s most interesting findings relate to geography: Fifty percent of donors give to schools within 25 miles of their zip code, with Manhattan, Brooklyn, Chicago, San Francisco, and Oklahoma City (in ranked order) identified as being the most charitable cities for these projects. The study also revealed that Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, Brooklyn, and the Bronx are the cities with the greatest need (or requests via Donors Choose). The fact that these lists do not match up exactly might be an issue worth exploring for both Donors Choose and for educators and administrators in those respective cities.

Indiana nonprofit sector grew during Great Recession, outpacing state's for-profits and government : Newscenter : IUPUI: Despite two recessions that hit the state’s for-profit sector hard, a new Indiana University report shows that the state’s nonprofit sector grew every year from 1995 through 2011. However, this growth was uneven and driven mainly by the nonprofit health care and education industries.
Three smaller industries -- arts, entertainment and recreation; social assistance; and membership and related organizations -- proved to be much more vulnerable to recessions and other external pressures. In each case, employment and payroll grew during the early years of the 1995-2011 period, but then stalled and declined.
