Not everything that matters can be measured

Not everything that matters can be measured: I frequently hear nowadays that our sector doesn’t actually know if we’re doing any good.

This makes me really cross. There’s something ridiculously patronising about the notion that day after day a bunch of charity sector workers and volunteers turn up to work with no idea at all if what they’re doing is helping!

Some of this study’s most interesting findings relate to geography: Fifty percent of donors give to schools within 25 miles of their zip code, with Manhattan, Brooklyn, Chicago, San Francisco, and Oklahoma City (in ranked order) identified as being the most charitable cities for these projects. The study also revealed that Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, Brooklyn, and the Bronx are the cities with the greatest need (or requests via Donors Choose). The fact that these lists do not match up exactly might be an issue worth exploring for both Donors Choose and for educators and administrators in those respective cities.

Indiana nonprofit sector grew during Great Recession, outpacing state's for-profits and government : Newscenter : IUPUI: Despite two recessions that hit the state’s for-profit sector hard, a new Indiana University report shows that the state’s nonprofit sector grew every year from 1995 through 2011. However, this growth was uneven and driven mainly by the nonprofit health care and education industries.

Three smaller industries -- arts, entertainment and recreation; social assistance; and membership and related organizations -- proved to be much more vulnerable to recessions and other external pressures. In each case, employment and payroll grew during the early years of the 1995-2011 period, but then stalled and declined.
